Unit Plan: License to Heal: A Journey Through the Role of a Genetics Counselor


Summary:


Freshmen Biology students will take on the role of a genetics counselor and will work in groups to diagnose a genetic disorder (Tay-Sachs, Hemophilia, Sickle Cell Anemia, Huntington's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, or Muscular Dystrophy). Students will be introduced to and communicate with their "clients" through the wiki space. This unit will cover principles of genetics and heredity. Basic skills will include: researching a genetic disorder, creating a pedigree, creating a punnett square, and creating a brochure on the genetic disorder.

How can we apply scientific skills, tools, and methods of inquiry to solve real-world problems?

How are biological traits passed to future generations?

How can I track the inheritance of a trait in my family?
Content Questions:
1. How can we use Punnett squares to determine offspring traits?

2. How can we chart a family's history?

3. What genetic disorder affects the family my group is studying?

4. What information would an individual or family dealing with a genetic disorder want to know?


5. How can we determine the probability of inheriting a genetic disorder?
